At this event, we will discuss the evolving role of a customs professional (both in customs and business) in the face of tariffs, sanctions, sustainability requirements, the problem of over-regulation, the challenge of harmonising rules, EU Customs Reform and the rapid development of technologies, especially the application of AI.
We will cover topics such as:
- Main sources of new tasks and responsibilities for a customs professional
- How do we define quality knowledge and the role of technology in it
- Education in AI era – learning to utilize opportunities and to manage the risks
- How will the role of a customs professional have changed in 5 or 10 years
All participants are invited to contribute their views and experiences.
Speakers

Albert Willem Veenstra is Professor of Trade and Logistics at Rotterdam School of Management and also affiliated with the Erasmus University Centre for Urban, Port and Transport Economics. He previously worked at TNO and the Dutch logistics funding agency TKI Dinalog. He has been involved in major EU research projects on container security (INTEGRITY) and customs innovation (CASSANDRA). As of 2024, he is Academic Director of the MSc in Customs and Supply Chain Compliance. His research focuses on modernising customs supervision, including new data-driven approaches for large-scale e-commerce oversight.

Ramunas Sablinskas is an IT solution architect and technical product manager at CC Learning UAB (CustomsClear). He has extensive experience in digital identity and e-signature systems across the EU. Dr Sablinskas holds a PhD in Mathematics and Computer Science and has been deeply involved in neural network optimisation since 1995, during the early days of artificial intelligence technologies.
