UK roundtable: the ‘new precision’ in customs declarations and beyond

Description

At this roundtable, we will discuss the ‘new precision’ required when completing customs declarations and, moreover, when working with product-related sustainability data in the supply chain.

This arises from:

  • the interpretations we learn from the disputes that end up in the courts (which shows how complex legal language is, even though the law should generally be written in a way that is understandable to all who read it); and
  • sustainability laws, which bring new challenges and make the use of the latest technologies for compliance management inevitable.

All participants are invited to contribute their views and experiences.

Speakers

Timothy Lyons
Timothy Lyons is a barrister and King’s Counsel (England and Wales), and a barrister in the Republic of Ireland and a member of the Bar of Brussels. He is the author of the book “EU Customs Law”.

Timothy will share insights on ‘origin’, ‘consignment’ and ‘export’, highlighting why the basics still matter.

Ilona Kawka
Ilona Kawka is a Senior digital trade and Customs consultant at the Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade (www.export.org.uk), the UK’s leading organisation for international trade professionals.

Ilona will talk about the simplification of data requirements in the customs declaration and the increasing complexity of data requirements beyond that, and how technology can help with compliance.

Moderator

Enrika Naujoke
Enrika Naujoke is CEO of CustomsClear, the European customs and trade knowledge platform (www.customsclear.net), which serves as a trusted resource for practitioners and experts to navigate the complexities of customs compliance and trade, leveraging the latest in technology and AI (www.picoco.ai) to make regulatory knowledge more accessible and actionable.

About customs roundtables

Customs is a complex area and it’s difficult to stay up to date with all the latest developments.

Customs roundtables are designed for the customs community to come together and exchange views regarding various areas of customs. This can be either specific cases and questions or wider industry trends. The discussions will go into technical details and will allow participants to learn from peers and exchange views and experiences. It’s an excellent opportunity to have an open discussion on some of the most pressing customs issues. We aim to create an open and supportive live forum that also offers the facility to continue discussions online.

We welcome customs experts and experts-to-be in all areas of customs (origin, valuation, special procedures etc) and from all backgrounds (legal, in-house, academic, consulting etc).

Register to the customs roundtables by signing up for a Membership Plan and get access to the CustomsClear Customs Practitioners’ Forum.
